Although our purpose has been to overcome shyness, there are people who refuse to stop being shy. Not because they think it’s too difficult to overcome shyness, nor because they think they won’t, but because there are people who consider shyness a virtue. On this occasion we analyze the pros and cons of shyness.
Shyness as a defect: disadvantages of being shy
- We are well aware of the negative consequences of shyness in all areas of life. Shyness paralyzes us, isolates us and makes us feel inferior. From this point of view, shyness is a serious personality defect that we must try to overcome in order to enjoy social encounters and life in general more.
- Shyness is closely linked to emotional problems, low self-esteem, anxiety and sometimes also depression. It is therefore a rather dangerous character trait that we must learn to neutralize. It is not about stopping being shy to make others like you better, but about stopping being so shy to live any situation naturally.
Shyness as a virtue: advantages of being shy
- However, there are those who think that shyness is a virtue and is full of advantages. Logically, these are those people who do not suffer from pathological shyness, but from a shy or socially inhibited character. These moderately shy people enjoy their shyness because it allows them to spend more time with themselves, listen to themselves more than others, and thus get to know themselves better.
- Shy people are also often called good friends because of that trait that makes them listen more than talk. Also because of their slow and calm attitude when they are with trusted people, something that inspires great calm. And without a doubt, the greatest advantage of shyness is that halo of mystery that surrounds the shy person, not very talkative, guardian of great secrets yet to be discovered.
