How to stop thinking so much: learn to control your thoughts

It seems we think too much. Experts say that we let our minds run our lives by allowing a large number of thoughts to flow uncontrollably. The idea is that if we learn to manage the flow of thoughts, we could focus only on those that benefit us in order to achieve our dreams and goals. Therefore, it is not about staying in a flat encephalogram state, but about stopping thinking about useless things.

Women think more than men

  • Women are experts in this matter of leaving our mind free to go wherever it wants. According to the American psychiatrist Daniel G. Amen, women have 90% of the brain active while men only 9%. And from this data several surprising things can be deduced.
  • The brain of women and men does not work in the same way. Perhaps that is why we are doomed to not understand each other, since the brain capacities that we activate are different. This could explain the widespread belief that women talk more than men and, if we go to the extreme, that other myth that says that women are more intelligent than men would also have a certain logic.
  • But the fact that women have more brain capacities active is not as positive as it seems, since that may be the reason why we cannot be happy. That facility that we have to go around everything usually turns against us, since we are unable to control the stream of thoughts that our mind generates. One more obstacle on our way to happiness since too many thoughts obscure all that is positive that we may be experiencing at that moment.

How to stop thinking

  • So it is necessary to learn to control our mind and for this it is necessary to stop thinking. But it is evident that we cannot stop thinking and make our minds blank; If you’ve ever tried, you’ll know it’s impossible. But what we can do is eliminate the “noise” that so many disordered thoughts produce. Quickly discard empty thoughts to focus our minds on everything that can help us to be happier.
  • And it seems that the best way to get control of our thoughts is through meditation; an exercise that allows us to control everything that happens in the mind. Through meditation techniques we can learn to focus on a single thought, without paying attention to all those useless ideas that go through our heads.
  • As an example, when you are going up a staircase you are thinking about a thousand things at the same time and all your worries accumulate in your mind. Meditation proposes that at that moment you eliminate everything from your mind except the fact that you are going up the stairs. For that you have to look at your own movement or the shape of the steps, but focus all your attention on climbing the stairs and everything else disappears.
  • Indeed, focusing on climbing a ladder is not very useful either to solve your problems or to help you be happy, but if you work on this technique, over time you will be able to recognize in your current of thoughts those that you need to achieve your goals, focus in them and ignore those that harm you.
